Fast track to February 2013 Lungile Khumalo is now signed to one of the most respected and reputable record company Touch Africa Records headed by one South Africa’s entertainment head honcho’s Mdu Ngcobo.
Yes she will always be her Mommy’s little Lungile however, the whole of South Africa knows her now as Naima kay, she has moved from the small ward in Bomela clinic to the biggest music stages in South Africa and she is now known as NAIMA KAY which is an Arabic name defining Peace and Tranquility.
“The first time I heard her sing I looked around like I was crazy, yes I han’t seen an angel or heard it sing before but I was quite adamant I was hearing one’ says Mdu Ngcobo “we were at the Ugu Jazz Auditions in Port Shepstone and I said to myself no South Africa needs to hear this, and the rest as they say is history” continues Ngcobo. Mdu Ngcobo says he gave her name Naima Kay because she has
an amazing talent of bringing peace and tranquility to your soul the moment she utters a first note.
Naima started singing at her High School choir Ingwemabala High school in 2005, then the love for music grew on her. “I was a weird kid, while all my friends were going crazy about kwaito and dance music I was the biggest fan of Mama uBusi Mhlongo, Dorothy Masuka and Miriam Makeba” Naima explains.
As she went through high school music was now her first love “I seriously never visualized music as a career for myself, I mean I’m just a young girl coming from a small town near nowhere, I had always said to myself that career in music is for Big Town girls” Naima says. She had just completed an album with Touch Africa Records which was released in April 2013.
When she got to hold the first copy of it, her eyes sparkled with fire when she talked about the best moments of her career so far “I have recorded an
album with mzansi’s greatest producers such as Robbie Malinga, I performed my song “Samba” with my childhood idol mama uDorothy Masuka on the 26th December 2012 at the most prestigious event the Durban Jazz Festival” Naima says boastfully.
